Kindergarten students bring boundless enthusiasm and curiosity to each day. Keeping them engaged means tapping into their natural sense of wonder and calls for a teacher who infuses creativity into every lesson. Teaching 5- and 6-year-olds to read the English language, in particular, is the work of a true master educator!
"Kindergarten is my absolute favorite grade to teach because of how much growth happens during the year," said Kindergarten teacher Katie Rutledge. "The students are so excited to learn."
In August, Ms. Rutledge worked on phonemic awareness— helping students understand that spoken words are made up of individual sounds called phonemes.
Ms. Rutledge pronounced words, guiding students to identify the starting and ending phonemes. This practice helps children isolate, blend, segment, and manipulate sounds to form spoken words.
"I have been teaching for 20 years and watching their faces light up when everything starts coming together and they realize just how much they are able to do on their own never gets old," Ms. Rutledge said.
