To Bee or Not to Bee

by Michael Porter
Third graders learn about our favorite pollinators.
Our third-grade students had the opportunity to learn about bees and their vital role in our ecosystem when special guest Carol McBryde visited JCDS in October.

Ms. McBryde is a member of the Jacksonville Beekeepers Association and has been a frequent presenter at JCDS about her experiences with bees.

The students have been learning about bees in their science class. They first learned about plants and flowers, then moved on to pollination and different types of pollinators. Bees are the most prolific pollinators of them all, and are crucial to our environment.

The students sketched bees in class and labeled their body parts, so seeing the bees up close and in person was quite an event! They were able to identify the queen bee, who was marked with a dot of blue paint.
