Little Sharks Must Swim!

by Michael Porter
Early learning students receive careful guidance in the pool.
Students from Pre-K 4 and older are currently enjoying their swimming unit in PE.

Safety first is the number one priority. Lifeguards are constantly scanning the pool, looking for any potential problems.

"Our classes for Pre-K 4 and Kindergarten turn teaching essential swimming skills into playful games and engaging activities," said PE Specialist Doug Postell.

Students participate in fun and engaging activities, such as practicing blowing bubbles in the water while pretending to be bubbles themselves. This helps develop their breath control in a fun, imaginative way. Under the guidance of the PE specialists, the students practice floating on their backs and learn basic strokes.

The children use pool noodles to learn to kick and glide across the water while pretending to be dolphins or other sea creatures of their choosing. They may also jump into shallow water to find "hidden treasures" — floating objects — to promote water comfort and retrieval skills.

Water safety and basic swimming skills are extremely important as Floridians since we are fortunate to have many bodies of water and opportunities for various water sports so close by.
